How outsourcing can help you grow your business (With Micaela Lindsay)

This month’s blog post is a bit different, and my first time co-writing a blog!

A lot of people don’t realise how outsourcing their editing can help them actually increase profits as well as productivity. To discuss this, I’ve invited Micaela of Micaela Karina Photography to talk about her experiences with outsourcing. Micaela is a creative entrepreneur and photographer based in London. As well as being an incredible business mentor, she also hosts a brilliant podcast!

As Micaela has so many projects ongoing at once, I just had to find out how she was doing it all.
I was delighted to discover her secret: Outsourcing.

1. Tell me a bit about yourself. How did you get started?
I began wedding photography 8 years ago when I started assisting a friend at her weddings. Within a year I had gone from hobby to part-time wedding photography and continued to shoot part time for 3 years while completing my masters degree. Once my husband and I moved to London, I put down the cameras and began working 9-5. After being made redundant I went back to wedding photography, and launched my business all over again in the UK!

Before I outsourced, my editing pile would loom over my work and affect my productivity. It was always something I ’needed to get to’.

2. When did you start outsourcing your editing, and why?
I knew that if I wanted to run my business efficiently and productively, that outsourcing would be the only way to be able to shoot 30-40 weddings a year on two days work a week. (I have some other projects I want to dabble in…). Spending 2-3 days procrastinating on editing my photos when I could be spending that time working on my marketing, enjoying time with my husband or working on my other businesses seemed like a no brainer.

3. How has outsourcing improved your workflow?

Before I outsourced, my editing pile would loom over my work and affect my productivity. It was always something I ’needed to get to’. Now, as soon as I get home from a wedding I do the sneak peeks, outsource my culling, review the culled images, and then send the culled images to the editor. When the images are sent back to me, I’m able to review each one with a fresh perspective - which ultimately means I deliver a better gallery to my clients.

4. What do you usually look for in a person/business when finding somebody to outsource to?
They need to be able to take feedback well, listen and adapt. I normally give them one initial task, and if they overdeliver on the first task - then I know that they’re going to be good to work with.

5. Finally, what would you say to anyone considering outsourcing their photo or video editing?
Do it. Do it now. It might not feel good when you hand over the work. It might not even feel good when you pay for the work. But when you get back your edited images and you’ve spent the last 3 days working on something else in your business while someone else has done the work? That feeling is worth every penny you’ve spent and more.

There you have it! Thank you so much Micaela. If you would like to talk about outsourcing your video editing, don’t hesitate to reach out!
