how to work with a video editor

You need a video editor... now what?

From first enquiry to finished video edit.

Whether my clients need a freelance editor for a short film, a commercial video editor or someone to outsource their wedding video editing to, the process plays out in a very similar way.
It can be very abstract, though, which is why I created this page.

Here I’ll walk you through the stages of what to expect when trusting me with your footage and project.

  • Obviously, at the very beginning stands your enquiry. Are you working on a short film? Do you have the material for a commercial project? Have you captured lovely wedding video footage? Let’s chat about how I can help you. It’s also important we discuss what you need in a video editor and how I can fit best into your workflow. If I take on outsourced editing work, either because you don’t enjoy it, don’t have the time or need another pair of eyes on it, I will also ask for reference material so I can adapt my style accordingly.

PS: I absolutely love a challenge, and many clients have hired me for one tricky job, only to outsource the rest of their editing to me, too!

  • Once you decide to hire me as your video editor, we sign an agreement that outlines the details. This way, we both have clarity, and I know I can finally dive into your project.

  • Speaking of which: I will need the footage you captured. Most clients like to use cloud storage services like Google Drive, Dropbox or WeTransfer. Of course you can also send me hard drives via post, like Jay did on their short film!

  • Now you can lean back and relax while I dive into the footage. Depending on your wishes, you will provide feedback and request changes or adjustments. My goal is to deliver a perfect edit to you, so I’m happy to polish until we’re there.

  • Once you’re satisfied with the final edit, I export the video file for you in the format(s) you require. Now you can send them to clients, embed them online for the world to see, or add your own tweaks and adjustments.
