How to Find the Right Wedding Video Editor for Your Brand
Finding the right wedding video editor can be a difficult process. Making sure the final film is perfect for your couples can become stressful, especially when you’re juggling multiple projects, deadlines and life commitments. When you decide to reach out for help, you need to make sure you are hiring the right person for your business.
Here are three things to consider in your search for the perfect editor.
The importance of having an editor who is on your wavelength In any creative industry, I think it’s important to work with others who are easy to talk to, adaptable and enjoy working with you. When hiring a video editor, you’re not just outsourcing a task; you're letting someone into your creative process. That’s why you want someone who can translate your ideas into a final film that reflects your vision. An editor who is on your wavelength will make everything easier for you, as they know what you’re aiming for and will support you in a way that makes you feel confident in the work you are creating together. They should be an individual who clicks with you and can understand what you’re trying to say, even if you’re not sure exactly what words to use to express the vibe you’re going for.Someone to help you find your styleBelieve it or not, so many of the videographers I’ve spoken to don’t even realise that they have a specific editing style until someone else recreates it. In my mind, your editing style is sort of like your handwriting. Everyone’s is unique, and while there may be some broader similarities with other filmmakers (such as broad descriptors like ‘fun’, ‘romantic’, ‘energetic’, ‘cinematic’) there are always other, finer details that set you apart from the rest, even if you yourself can’t quite put your finger on what they are. When a new client sends me footage, I always watch their previous films first. I pick out recurring details and recreate them in the edit. Most of the time, the videographer will tell me that the films feel identical to ones they’ve edited in the past, which allows the opportunity for the videographer to give feedback and collaborate with me. For me, that’s what being an editor is all about. It’s noticing the details that my clients might not even be aware of, helping shape or refine their editing style, and working alongside them to create the perfect final film. It’s one of the parts of this job that I find the most rewarding of all.Someone who is able to fit into your brand Working with a video editor who understands your objectives and where your business is headed makes a big difference. A good video editor can easily fit into your brand and is able to adapt to your business which is evolving constantly.A great video editor should have your business in their best interest and, if you want them to, they will be able to offer feedback or suggestions based on the type of footage you have and how your style is developing. I work with clients who are all at different stages of their filmmaking journey. Their individual brands are evolving all the time, whether it’s their first year or their fifteenth, and I’m constantly adapting the methods I use to create their films, as their personal taste and brand voice evolves.
This all links back to my first point: If the video editor you work with is adaptable, easy to talk to, and understands your brand, you’ll be able to trust them to deliver exactly what you’re looking for, every time. The relationship you have with your editor should be one that develops over time. It should flourish alongside you and your business, as you both learn and grow together.I felt like I could say exactly what I was looking for from the edit
and she completely understood me.
